Lesotho

Lesotho is a small, mountainous country in Southern Africa, entirely surrounded by South Africa. Known as the “Kingdom in the Sky,” Lesotho has high altitudes, with much of its territory situated over 1,800 meters above sea level. Its rugged landscapes are ideal for activities like trekking, horseback riding, and skiing in winter. Lesotho’s culture is rich, with a strong sense of identity rooted in traditional Basotho customs, including the iconic Basotho hat and blanket. The capital city, Maseru, is the political and economic center of the country, with a mix of urban development and traditional lifestyles.

  • Lesotho is the only country in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) in elevation, earning it the nickname “Kingdom in the Sky.”

  • The Maloti Mountains dominate Lesotho’s landscape and are a source of rivers that feed South Africa’s water supply, particularly through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.

  • Basotho blankets, traditionally worn by the people of Lesotho, are iconic symbols of the country and are widely used in daily life and ceremonies.
